No Leaky Developments

In late October, Bill and Craig Underwood tore down the old University Gulf station east of Underwood’s Fine Jewelers on Dickson Street to make way for a mixed-use development. r

Plans for the development were put on hold because of the terrorism of Sept. 11, 2001. Since then, several other developers have remodeled buildings along Fayetteville’s Dickson Street.r

“There were a lot of things going on, on Dickson Street, and we didn’t feel that the time was right,” said Craig Underwood, Bill Underwood’s son. “So this is the time to start looking at doing something again.”r

Craig Underwood said the plans drawn up three years ago called for a two-story building at the site, but all of that may change now.r

“When we put something in there, we want it to complement what we have [at Underwood’s Fine Jewelers],” Craig Underwood said.r

The Underwoods purchased the property from Donald C. Dingledine in 1997 for $300,000, according to court records. The lot has 161 feet that fronts Dickson Street. The building that currently houses Underwood’s Fine Jewelers has 50 feet that fronts Dickson, Craig Underwood said.r
