Michael Undernehr believes the secret to good service for commercial mowers is to provide a “true zero downtime guarantee.” That means that if a commercial mower needs warranty-covered maintenance, a loaner is provided. His shop offers complete sales and service on its equipment.

In addition to a two-year bumper-to-bumper warranty on all major parts, Undernehr said he also backs his mowers with a three-year guarantee on the mower deck and the deck spindle.

Undernehr’s new shop, L & M Mowers, offers Yazoo/Kees and Ferris mowers, which have independent suspension. He’s convinced they’re the best mowers for any commercial mowing needs.

Undernehr hopes to open a second shop in the next few years in the Fort Smith area.

“I plan on expanding, once these two mowers really catch on,” he said, referring to the Yazoo/Kees and Ferris models.

L & M Mowers also offers a wide range of other commercial-grade mowing and landscaping equipment, including Bed Shaper edgers; Bluebird products such as grinders, side cutters and aerators; and Tanaka blowers, weed eaters, chain saws, portable drills, augers and pumps.

Undernehr built a 5,000-SF shop on three acres in Lowell, with another three acres set aside for testing the mowing and landscaping equipment.

In addition to himself, Undernehr has two employees at L & M — a manager and a mechanic. He’ll add three to six employees in the coming year, depending on whether he opens a Fort Smith shop that soon.

Undernehr has an estimated $275,000 in startup costs that include the cost of the property, the shop construction and initial inventory. He hopes to get a return on the investment within five years.
