Daily Record puts a Little Extra in the Stocking

The Benton County Daily Record gave its readers an extra 48 pages of Christmas news on Christmas Day. Three added newspaper sections titled “Seasons Greetings 2002” offered up holiday features from a variety of news and wire sources on everything from reducing holiday stress to why pets aren’t good gifts. We found the additional news a perfect treat for bored holiday celebrators.

Suppliers of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. were the obvious advertising target. Most of the ads in the special sections were from suppliers wishing the retail giant happy holidays. The special section also likely netted a fine profit for the newspaper. We counted 17 full-page ads.

The daily newspaper and its sister publication, Fayetteville’s Northwest Arkansas Times, aligned themselves with the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 1999. But the Bentonville version seems to have done a better job of retaining its own image. The newspaper continues to offer a separate opinion section on Sundays.
