Barrett Tells it Like it is on ‘Sports Rap’

We’ve been meaning to give kudos to Chuck Barrett, host of the statewide talk show “Sports Rap” that originates from KFAY, 1030 AM, in Fayetteville. A recent caller to the show asked Barrett, “Who would you say are the most objective and best sports writers in Northwest Arkansas?” The follow-up question was “and who are the biggest ‘homers,’ ” or the most subjective?

Barrett answered that Nate Allen of Nate Allen Sports Service and Bob Holt of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette are tops for objectivity. Allen’s freelance service supplies more than a dozen newspapers across the state with news on Razorbacks athletics, and Holt is a longtime member of the D-G’s Razorbacks coverage team.

The host then said Otis Kirk, sports recruiting reporter for the D-G and a frequent guest on “Sports Rap,” is probably the biggest “homer.”

We agree completely with both assessments.

There are a number of media personalities, especially in the sports field, who frequently tell it “like it ain’t.” And we don’t always agree with the views espoused on “Sports Rap.”

But Barrett’s frankness gives his show credibility, and in turn makes it an entertaining “must listen” on weekdays from 4 -6 p.m.

Now, if we can just get him to admit Arkansas needs an offensive coordinator.
