Loislaw.com, Van Buren’s legal research provider, has filed a countersuit against JurisDictionUSA Inc. of Phoenix, Ariz., in Crawford County Circuit Court. The Northwest Arkansas Business Journal reported Feb. 4 that JurisDictionUSA had filed a $75 million breach of contract claim against the company, which previously traded publicly on the Nasdaq exchange.

The two firms entered into an October 2000 marketing and licensing agreement to sell a software product called “LoisDesk” as partners. But Loislaw was acquired in 2001 by Amsterdam-based publisher Wolters Kluwer NV, and the wheels of the deal fell off shortly thereafter.

Loislaw’s counterclaim seeks “an amount to be determined at trial.” Loislaw alleges breaches by the Phoenix Internet-based application service provider.

Former Loislaw owner Kyle Paker and his wife, Renee, who sold Loislaw for $95 million before moving to Florida, are also named in JurisDictionUSA’s complaint.

Loislaw is now actually a wholly owned subsidiary of Wolters’ property Aspen Publishers of Gaithersburg, Md. Wolters did more than $2.6 billion in sales for 2001.

The Little Rock law firm of Friday Eldredge & Clark is representing Loislaw. No trial was yet available.
