Fayetteville dignitaries spoke to about 250 African-American high school seniors from a four-state area on Feb. 28 at the Clarion Inn in Fayetteville.

The program was presented by the UA’s Multicultural Center, and the dignitaries were there to convince them why they should make the University of Arkansas their choice next school year.

The event came just three days after UA Basketball Coach Nolan Richardson said Fayetteville was not conducive to blacks.

“Man, do you think [Richardson’s comments] put us in an uncomfortable position?” one local businessman quipped. He later said the event went very smooth and the point was stressed to the students that Fayetteville is actually a very open and diverse community.
