Dennis Yocum, system manager for the Northwest Arkansas region of Cox Communications Inc., said the cable company is planning to offer a video-on-demand service by the end of the year.

“That’s not been announced,” he said, “but we know it’s coming.”

The service will allow Cox subscribers in Northwest Arkansas to select movies to watch on television on a pay-per-view basis.

The service also will allow customers to “tape” shows on a computer chip to be viewed at a later date, much like analog video taping.

Yocum said Cox is also scheduled to finish its $25 million renovation of Fayetteville’s cable system by the end of the year. The renovation involves more than 1,000 miles of cable.

Renovation of Springdale’s cable system was completed last year, Yocum said. Work is being done this year to revamp television cable in Bentonville and Rogers as well, increasing bandwidth there from 550 megahertz to 860 megahertz.

Yocum said planning for the Fayetteville renovation began three years ago.
