Fayetteville Fights Junk Yard Wars

A city of Fayetteville public works ordinance requires all commercial waste haulers to ask permission from the Fayetteville City Council if they want to offer roll-off service within the city limits.

The law has been largely ignored since SunRay Sanitation contracted with the city in the early ’90s. For now, the city won’t enforce the ordinance, said Fayetteville Environmental Services Director Gary Dumas, but it could at any time.

The overlooked law came back into play in December, when the city began offering commercial waste disposal and competing against established haulers Waste Management Inc. of Tontitown and Roll-Off Service Inc. of Springdale.

A letter Dumas mailed to solid waste consumers chaffed Roll-Off Service Vice President Cheryl Zotti, who directed the city’s solid waste division for 12 years before joining then-fledgling Roll-Off.

The note pointed out that no other waste hauler is contracted to provide service.

Zotti said her company actually gained a few customers from Dumas’ letter.

“None of our customers have wavered,” Zotti said. “No one wants to be bullied.”

Roll-Off currently has no plan to contract with the city.

Coincidentally, when the city began offering commercial waste hauling, administrators began ordering “Razorback red” bins to replace the city’s standard green theme. Bright red waste receptacles were previously recognized as the signature color of Roll-Off Service Inc. in Springdale.
