Heart Association Promises Shocking Prize

Word is that company participants in this year’s American Heart Association Heart Walk will get a shot at winning an automated external defibrillator (AED) for their office. The life-saving devices can administer an electric shock for restoring normal heart rhythm within three minutes.

Valued at about $4,000, the defibrillators run on rechargable batteries and are reccomended office equpment by OSHA. The devices are said to increase the chance of heart attack victims’ survial from five to nearly 75 percent. Immediate defibrillation can revive more than 90 percent of victims.

According to OSHA reports, of the 6,339 workplace fatalities nationwide during 1999 and 2000, 815 of them resulted form cardiac arrest.
