Lucas Roebuck, the somewhat controversial managing editor of the Northwest Arkansas Times, said he will resign by Jan. 1 to peruse a career in politics.

“I have my eye on politics. That’s all I can say at this point,” said Roebuck, 26, who has held the ME position at the Times for about a year. “I think it’s very fair and safe to say I’ve always looked at politics as an option for my life.”

Roebuck wouldn’t specify which political seat he is eyeing. He denied rumors that he wants to fill David Malone’s shoes when the state senator from District 35 is ousted by term limits at the end of 2002. Malone, who heads the University of Arkansas Foundation, has held the senate seat since 1985.

“I wouldn’t be eyeing David Malone’s senate seat, but all will be unveiled soon,” Roebuck said.

Originally from California, Roebuck earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English in 1993 from John Brown University in Siloam Springs. He worked for The Cornerstone Group in Fayetteville and the Benton County Daily Record in Bentonville before taking the job at the Times.

In his short time at the Times, Roebuck has become known for his columns, which are often personally revealing and reflect his fundamentalist Christian values.
