Morning News Offers a Heck of a Deal

Our office subscriptions to The Morning News and D-G recently ran out, so we called them both to re-up. We asked for the “best deal” from both publications and got remarkably different responses.

The woman we spoke to at the D-G said her newspaper’s best rate was $6.50 per month ($78 annually), whether you’re a new subscriber or not. So we said send us an invoice.

But the rep at The Morning News said “special deals” were only for new subscribers. Our re-up rate would have been $6.14 per month ($73.65 annually), but she said new subscribers could receive the paper for $5 per month ($60 annually).

Normally we’re not so cheap, but in this economy $13 is $13. We asked her to just go ahead and let our subscription lapse, then sign us back up at the discount rate.

She said she couldn’t do that unless our subscription had been canceled for at least 30 days. So we said, “Ok, cancel our subscription right now and start it up again in 30 days. It’s your circulation numbers, not ours.”

We know we’ll miss some great reportage in The Morning News during the next month, but at that point, it was the principle of the matter. We don’t like the idea of being penalized for being good customers.
