The City of Fayetteville has been scrutinized for its stringent new 20-page tree ordinance, causing many developers to pass on future projects within the largest city in Northwest Arkansas. But it was the city itself that went chainsaw crazy at the future site of the new Fayetteville Public Library on School Avenue.
A copy of the Fayetteville Public Library tree inventory obtained by the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal shows that 34 of the 68 trees on the property were not recommended for removal by an arborist brought in to inspect the land. But the city’s tree administrator, Kim Hesse, has decided to cut them all down anyway.
Included in the elimination will be 12 “large” trees, those ranging from 51 to 100 feet in height. And five of those large trees were not recommended for removal. Also, 16 “medium” trees, those ranging from 25 to 50 feet in height, will be removed. And nine of those were not recommended for removal.
Fayetteville got the approval through the city planning commission’s large scale development committee.
Interesting move by the city administration since the final reading of the tree ordinance will take place Oct. 2 at the Fayetteville City Council meeting.
