On July 6, Mercy Health System of Northwest Arkansas announced plans to add open-heart surgery and angioplasty services to the cardiac department at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rogers. Hospital administrators would not disclose the cost of renovating the department, but the services will be available in January.

The finished surgery suite will be about 600 SF.

St. Mary’s currently provides diagnostic procedures, noninvasive nuclear medicine and echocardiogram heart studies.

Hospital spokesman Clark Ellison said Drs. John Weiss, Russ Wood and James Counce from the Northwest Arkansas Cardiovascular Surgical Clinic in Springdale will begin performing surgeries at St. Mary’s. No one at the surgical clinic would confirm the plans.

St. Mary’s also hired cardiologist Michael Allen to support the cardiac program. Previously Allen worked at St. Mary’s for almost 14 years before he left to practice for a year in Kansas City, Mo. Allen rejoined Mercy Health July 1.

In the fall, a yet-unnamed cardiologist from outside of Arkansas will join Allen and Dr. Douglas Marciniak at St. Mary’s.
