Cricket Communications, the wireless phone subsidiary of publicly traded Leap Wireless International Inc., plans to add Northwest Arkansas to its service areas sometime this quarter. Fiesta Square on Fayetteville’s College Avenue has been targeted for a local Cricket retail center.

The San Diego company invaded central Arkansas in late 2000 and the Arkansas River Valley in May with its “comfortable wireless” campaigns.

Things must have gone pretty well. Cricket, which specializes in local wireless calls, has added a new twist for Northwest Arkansas. Its customers here will be able to make unlimited calls to Springdale, Rogers, Lowell, Bentonville, Fayetteville and Fort Smith for $29.95 per month. Calls may be received from anywhere.

The company’s phones start at $99.95 and offer voice mail, caller ID and call waiting for an additional fee. Donna Casey will serve as market manager for Northwest Arkansas and Bobby Terhune is state manager.
