Little Rock technology firm Acxiom Corp., which employs 40 people at the University of Arkansas’ Genesis Technology Incubator in Fayetteville, recently announced it would cut employee pay by 5 percent.

The strategy was to reduce overhead with the pay cuts for its 6,000 employees instead of layoffs. About 5,100 employees who make $25,000 or more were affected.

David Roland, business unit leader for Axciom’s Fayetteville development office, said the Northwest Arkansas troops took the news “fairly well.”

“No one wants a pay cut obviously,” Roland said. “But, at the same time we’re getting stock options to match the cut. If the stock does well, we could make that money back and more.”

Axciom’s Fayetteville office is doing some of the core software development for the firm’s AbiliTec product.

Employees who volunteered to give up more than 5 percent of their pay received a two-for-one stock buy-in.
