Operation Frontline, sponsored by Tyson Foods Inc., held its inaugural class for Chicago residents Nov. 28 for the nutrition education program of the anti-hunger organization Share Our Strength.

Operation Frontline has already touched more than 15,000 at risk of hunger in 90 communities across the country. It expanded to Chicago as part of a new, $10 million commitment by Tyson.

Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline teaches food budgeting, cooking skills and nutrition to adults and children at risk of hunger and malnutrition to help them learn to become self-sufficient.

Taught by volunteer chefs and nutritionists, the six-week courses focus on topics such as healthful cooking for the heart, smart snacking, shopping on a budget, financial planning and food safety. At the end of each class, participants share the meal they’ve just learned to make and leave with the ingredients needed to prepare the meal at home.
