AmeriServe Food Distribution Inc., the nation’s largest food and supplies distributor to restaurants, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Jan. 31.
About 40 percent of the distributor’s accounts are with Tricon Global Restaurants Inc., which owns Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell. Officials at Tyson Foods Inc., which had extended $25 million in trade credits to AmeriServe, say they were caught off guard.
They’re also worried restaurants won’t get their chicken.
“We’d been told as recently as last week by AmeriServe this wasn’t going to occur,” said Ed Nicholson, a spokesman for the Springdale poultry company.
