It’s been a tough year for the Van Buren Advertising and Promotion Commission.

Director Maryl Koeth said at the Wednesday night (Dec. 9) monthly meeting that October tax revenues were down more than 2% compared to the same time last year.

“October was probably one of the worst months regarding tax receipts,” Koeth said. “But talking with other A&P directors across the state, we are not alone in that. … I’m hoping that November and December are better. At some point it’s bound to get better.

The director is seeing some improvements in the economy and expects to feel those effects soon. However, she’s still sticking to a tight budget for next year.

The 2010 budget of $514,884 was approved during the meeting, which is about $12,000 more than last year. Next year’s budget does include $260,789 for advertising, which is up $52,000 over what was spent this year. Another $32,000 was added for operating expenses and $40,000 for development; however, these numbers are in line with last year’s proposed budget.

The actual 2009 budget numbers came in much lower, which accounts for the difference. The commission will use money in its reserve accounts to help fund those areas.

Tax revenues are expected to remain the same.

One item not in the budget was a check delivered this week for $11,429. The money was appropriated during the 2007 Legislative Session for the Regional Veteran’s Memorial Park, which will be built on the corner of Webster and Main Street.

New officers were elected during the meeting. Debbie Foliart will be the chairman, Rusty Myers will serve as vice chairman and Mary Ann Dodd will be treasurer for 2010.

Koeth reminded the members that the Van Buren Christmas parade will be 6:30 p.m., Dec. 12 on Main Street.
