Hungry for a hearty sandwich? Look no further than Stone Mill Bread & Flour Co., which has some of the best sandwiches around and certainly one of the most expansive sandwich menus we’ve seen.

At Stone Mill Bread, it’s not build-your-own but design-your-own sandwich. That’s much harder than it sounds, the problem being the many choices the business offers. It’s decisions, decisions, decisions.

Start with the bread, all of which is made fresh at the site. The usuals are wheat, country white, light wheat and sesame sunflower plus whatever daily specials were baked that day. We tried the sesame sunflower, and that’s enough to make a meal by itself.

Once that decision is made, it’s time to move on to meats. Choose from chicken, corned beef, London broil, pastrami, smoked ham, smoked turkey or chicken salad. (We told you there were lots of choices!)

You’ll get the option to choose one of five cheeses: American, cheddar, jalapeno, provolone or Swiss. The jalapeno cheese had a bite that could spice up any conservative meat-and-bread combination.

Then it’s a simple matter of naming your complements: lettuce, tomato, onion, mayonnaise, mustard or spicy mustard.

When the sandwich is made, it’s delicious and extremely filling. Ravenous eaters might want the whole version ($5) but those with smaller appetites may prefer a half-sandwich ($3.25).

Prefer a vegetarian version? No problem. For $4, there’s a veggie sandwich, $2.75 for half a veggie sandwich. Or try a reuben ($5) or club sandwich ($5.25).

The sandwiches are served with organic blue corn tortilla chips and a pickle spear.

The restaurant also offers gourmet coffees, soft drinks and healthy options like juice and juice drinks.

The restaurant’s baked potato ($3.50 for a loaded version) is on summertime hiatus.

Diners can enjoy their meal at tables inside or out at Stone Mill. The tables seem crowded but turnover is fairly quick.

Also, if the weather is nice, you can dine at tables on the front porch. If you’re there at the right time, the Arkansas-Missouri Railroad passenger train may pass by, so give a wave to the passengers.

Carry-out seems to be a big business here, so even if you’re in a hurry, Stone Mill is a good place to stop.

Stone Mill Bread is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
