How Much Was That?

It looks like John White, chancellor of the University of Arkansas’ Fayetteville campus, may spend about $500,000 per year to land a new provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

That’s about what it would cost to hire Claudia Mitchell-Kernan and her husband away from the University of California at Los Angeles.

As dean of the graduate division and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UCLA, Mitchell-Kernan earns $158,400 per year.

Apparently, if the UA hires her, it will also have to create a position for her husband, Keith Kernan, a professor in residence in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehaviorial Sciences at UCLA. He currently earns $151,400 per year in that position.

We hear White may be prepared to pay Mitchell-Kernan $225,000 per year to come to the UA, and it’s not likely that her husband will have to take a pay cut if they decide to make the move. In addition, UA employees receive benefits worth about 26 percent of their salaries.

The couple is expected to be on campus sometime this summer for a second interview.

If Mitchell-Kernan is hired at the $225,000 salary, she’ll be the second-highest paid administrator on campus next to White, who earns $235,750 per year.

White had planned to save the UA some $880,000 per year by laying off 31 Physical Plant workers but rescinded that decision on July 7.
