We agree that it’s a lowdown thief or thieves who have helped themselves to plants and such from the downtown Fayetteville square, and it’s especially deplorable that someone apparently exerted considerable effort to swipe a $1,000 teak wood bench.

But if the bench isn’t returned and city officials find themselves in the market for a replacement, we have a suggestion: They should check out Sam’s Club in Springdale, where we recently found for $170 a hand-carved teak bench of similar size to that one taken from the square. After we pay all our taxes, we’re lucky to still be able to shop at Sam’s.
