Clean & Green: Solar Home Is Giving Back To The Grid

Frank Kelly’s Little Rock home appears pretty normal on the outside. But the 3,000 sq. ft. house is radically different on the inside. It’s possibly the most energy efficient house in the state.

“We built this house in 2002 as the first new house connected to the net metering law that was passed in 2001 in Arkansas,” says Kelly.

“There are 42 thin-film laminates on a standing seam metal roof that make up a 5.4 kilowatt solar electric system,” he adds.

Kelly says his utility bills for both gas and electric average $108 a month, and since his house was built he says he’s put more than 14 thousand kilowatt hours back on the grid through net-metering.

Recently, Kelly opened his home to tours from interested individuals who may be eyeing a home makeover with some of the energy efficiencies he’s incorporated.
