Roll Call: Sen. Pryor & The 2010 Comparisons

Roll Call’s Kyle Trygstad has a top feature story on the re-election bid for Sen. Mark Pryor (D).

The high-profile 2014 race appears headed towards a Pryor vs. Rep. Tom Cotton (R) showdown, although Cotton has yet to say he’ll be a formal candidate.

The Roll Call piece enumerates several reasons why Pryor could be facing similar challenges that Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln faced in 2010. It also chronicles a few of the differences.

Here are 6 points outlined in the article:

1. Pryor does not have a primary (yet).
2. Pryor maintains a stronger brand.
3. It’s not 2010 — at least not yet.
4. Arkansas continues to trend Republican.
5. Both senators took controversial votes.
6. Outside groups will target the race.

From Roll Call:

Most of the outside spending against Lincoln came in the primary. But Pryor, who has already been hit on the airwaves and in mailboxes, is likely to be a top target through the general election.

Club for Growth and Senate Conservatives Fund have already combined to spend more than $260,000 in independent expenditures on direct mail, radio and television ads that attack Pryor for supporting Obama’s agenda.

Pryor is also being attacked by liberal groups on the issue of gun control as was reported on Friday.
