Rising filmmaker Jeff Nichols, a Little Rock native who will film a major motion picture in Arkansas later this year, will have an advance private screening of his current movie, "Take Shelter," later this month.

“Take Shelter,” starring Michael Shannon, won the Critics Week Grand Prize and Society of Auteurs and Dramatic Composers (SACD) Award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Shannon’s performance in the movie is being touted as potential Oscar material.  The movie is a psychological thriller about a man struggling with premonitions and potential mental illness.

It will have an advance private screening at 6 pm on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Rave theater in west Little Rock. The film will have a theatrical release on Oct. 28 in Arkansas.

Nichols will direct his next feature, “Mud,” in the Delta of southeast Arkansas this fall. The film will star Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon.  We reported on these developments earlier in the summer.

The screening is hosted by the Arkansas Film Commission, a division of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, along with the Little Rock Film Festival and the Little Rock Film Commission of the Greater Little Rock Chamber of Commerce. An audience dialogue with the filmmakers will follow the screening.
