Brummett: 2012 Elections Could Boost “conservative Advantage”

Political columnist John Brummett with our content partner, the Arkansas News Bureau, says that between redistricting, taxes, the Presidential election climate and 2010 GOP gains, the next election cycle could be another watershed year for Republicans.

"If I understand the current political climate and if it holds, then yes," Brummett said.

He cited President Obama’s poor standing in Arkansas, continued anger at health care reform, and the fact that several highway tax hike measures could be on the ballot in state in 2012 as reasons for an unfavorable Democratic climate.

"There is a dynamic that would work to the conservative advantage," he added.

Brummett discussed several high-profile issues circulating at the capitol as lawmakers enter their supposedly final week of business in the 88th General Assembly. Those issues include federal health care regulation, highway tax proposals, and Congressional redistricting.

"This is the most significant change in Congressional districts in my lifetime," Brummett said. "It’s because of our population shift and because we are now a two-party state and rather than just protecting our Democratic incumbents, now we have more partisan complications. It’s made for much more interesting politics."
