Gov. Mike Beebe set the special election dates for House District 54, which saw its controversial elected representative, Fred Smith (D-Crawfordsville), resign last month.

Smith was convicted by a southeast Arkansas judge on a theft count and plans to appeal his decision.

Beebe has set a special primary election for the House seat on April 12, 2011. The special general election will be held on July 12, long after the 88th General Assembly is expected to have adjourned.

Filing for the House seat will open at noon on Monday, February 14, 2011 and close on February 25. Drawing for ballot positions for the special primary election will take place on Friday, February 25.
