Skateboard Commitment To Kanis Park Attracts Grant From Coca-Cola
The city of Little Rock announced $150,000 grant from the Coca-Cola Company through the National Recreation and Park Association to revitalize Kanis Park.
The grant is part of a nationwide initiative that the soft drink company sponsors called “Refreshing Community Spaces.” Kanis Park was particularly attractive to the group because of the work already done by the DIY Krew, a skateboarding group in Central Arkansas.
“When we saw what the time, money and sweat equity members of the community have already invested in this place, it was clear that this is so close to a first class facility, all they needed was a little money to help finish what they started. We like to help out projects like that,” said Kel Villarrubia, Sr., Public Affairs and Communications Director for Coca-Cola.
The money will go toward a renewed skate bowl, drinking fountains, pavilions, plaza areas and batting cages.
Members of the skateboard group were on hand for the check presentation. They told stories of 15 years of using their own time and money to improve the skate park.
“There were times we weren’t really sure if this was a good idea,” said Allen Taylor, DIY Krew. “We didn’t know if the city would tear it all down or what. But then we realized they supported us, and we were so happy that Coke is willing to give us this money to finish the work.”
Coca-Cola reps said Little Rock is an important market for them. They are supporting ongoing initiatives to encourage healthy, active lifestyles. Through the American Beverage Association, the company is also working with corporate peers to encourage residents to balance what they eat, drink and do.
