The six-year highway project of the Big Rock Interchange in Little Rock is near completion.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday morning on the top flyover of the major connection of I-430 and I-630.

The $150 million dollar interchange modification project began in January 2009, in an effort to bring relief to the traffic for commuters, while also making it safer and more efficient.

Arkansas Highway Transportation Department Director, Scott Bennett, says change was needed to adapt to the growth of the city.

“Most of the traffic was just between 430 and 630. It did work well for a long time, but now with the completion of Financial Center Parkway and Chenal Parkway and the growth out west…there’s a lot more traffic out west that created the need for the overpass at Shackleford and the need of these ramps,” Bennett said.

Over 200,000 drivers take the interchange every day.

Although the ribbon cutting was Wednesday, the last segment of the project is expected to officially open within the next two weeks.
