On the first day of filing for an open House of Representatives seat, Democrats fielded two candidates in the District 54 special election.

The seat was vacated two weeks ago after the resignation of Rep. Fred Smith (D-Crawfordsville), who was convicted of a felony theft charge.

On Monday, Democrats Hudson Hallum of Marion and Kim Felker of Crawfordsville filed paperwork to run for the seat. The deadline for filing closes on Friday, February 25.

Gov. Mike Beebe has set a special primary election for the House seat on April 12, 2011. The District 54 special general election will be held on Tuesday, July 12.
