House Republicans say they are laying the foundation for school choice legislation that could bring more transfer flexibility in public schools and possible vouchers or tax credits for private school parents.

Rob Moritz with our content partner, the Arkansas News Bureau, reports:

Rep. Bruce Westerman, R-Hot Springs, who is policy chairman of the House Republican Caucus, said school choice is one of the issues the caucus is studying and proposed legislation could be written for the 2013 session.

“It’s still in the early stages,” Westerman said. “We’re evaluating lots of different policy now, and that’s one that’s out there and we’re evaluation at this time.”

Vouchers and tax credits are opposed by the Arkansas Education Association, said Brenda Robinson, vice president of the AEA.

“During our slow recovery from the recent economic recession, the last thing we need to do is spend our scarce tax dollars on private school vouchers,” she said.
