The Fort Smith Museum of History will exhibit an extensive collection of Niloak Pottery in the Boyd Gallery September 11, 2014 to March 28, 2015.  The collection has not been displayed for many years and is often requested.  Arkansas’ best known pottery, Niloak was collected all over the United States and was even given as gifts to presidents.  Manufactured from 1909 to 1947, the pottery was produced primarily in Benton in Saline County.  The name Niloak is the reverse spelling of kaolin, the clay used to produce the pottery.  Approximately 75 pieces will be on exhibit, including the art pottery Missionware known for its swirl patterns, as well as industrial castware.  An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, September 11, 5:00-7:00 p.m.   The reception is free with Museum admission:  $5 adults, $2 Children, under age six are free.
