The nation’s largest wireless company is looking to get larger.
On Sunday, AT&T announced a blockbuster deal to acquire the fourth largest U.S. wireless carrier, T-Mobile, in a cash-and-stock swap worth $39 billion.
Combined the two firms will have an estimated 39% market share, according to analysts. The merger is likely to set off a challenging regulatory battle, and with a $3 billion break-up fee, the stakes will be high.
Dallas-based AT&T announced the buyout of the Germany-based T-Mobile, which is owned by Deutsche Telecom. The move would not likely have a major effect on Arkansas, as T-Mobile does not have a large presence in state. AT&T is the state’s largest telecom in terms of landline and wireless service.
