Highlands Oncology CEO Jeff Hunnicutt said he is stepping down this week after nearly eight years with the Springdale-based cancer-care provider. His last day with the organization is Friday (June 19).

The Highlands Oncology Board of Directors will initiate a search process to identify the organization’s next CEO. During this transition, Dr. Thad Beck will serve as interim CEO.

“Over the past eight years, Jeff has helped guide Highlands through a period of remarkable growth and advancement,” according to a Thursday (June 18) news release from Highlands Oncology. “During his leadership, Highlands has doubled in size, expanded services across Northwest Arkansas, strengthened clinical research programs, invested in new technologies and facilities, and enhanced access to comprehensive cancer care for thousands of patients. We are grateful for Jeff’s contributions and wish him continued success in his future endeavors.”

In a social media post, Hunnicutt said he plans “to take some time to explore new opportunities and continue pursuing my passion for helping healthcare organizations leverage technology, innovation and operational excellence to better serve patients.”

Hunnicutt joined Highlands Oncology as its first CEO on Oct. 1, 2018. He was previously the chief operating officer at Northwest Medical Specialties in Tacoma, Wash.

Under his leadership, Highlands Oncology opened three new cancer centers, including its $30 million Springdale headquarters, expanded its research, developed new service lines, and added technology and innovation. The organization recently broke ground on the Rogers Cancer Center, which will resemble its headquarters building. The five-story, 125,000-square-foot center is set to open in 2028.

Also, Highlands Oncology recently invested about $4 million to expand its clinical trials program at its headquarters. The approximately 12,100-square-foot Clinical Trials Suite is designed to advance patient access to innovative cancer therapies, strengthen community-based oncology research, and support the growing complexity and scale of oncology research operations at Highlands Oncology.

Hunnicutt’s LinkedIn post had more than 150 comments and over 585 reactions as of Thursday afternoon (June 18). Many comments highlighted Hunnicutt’s impact on the region and the work he’s accomplished as CEO.

“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary team that continually pushed the boundaries of what community oncology can achieve,” he said. “I am incredibly grateful to the physicians, leaders, staff, partners, and friends who have been part of this journey. The relationships and experiences I’ve gained at Highlands will stay with me for a lifetime.”

Founded in 1996, Highlands Oncology is an independent, physician-owned cancer center that provides comprehensive oncology services, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, clinical research, imaging, infusion services, rehabilitation, pharmacy and supportive care programs.

The physician-led organization continues to be supported by “an exceptional team of physicians and other healthcare professionals who remain committed to delivering compassionate, innovative care to the patients and families we serve,” the release shows. “Patient care, clinical operations, and strategic initiatives will continue uninterrupted during this leadership transition. The organization is well-positioned for continued growth and remains committed to advancing cancer care throughout our region.”
