AG McDaniel Rejects Proposal To Legalize Marijuana
Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has rejected the ballot title submitted by a group seeking to push forward on an initiative to legalize marijuana.
The group, Arkansans for Medical Cannabis, is pushing a measure somewhat similar to an effort that made the ballot in 2012, but failed in a close general election vote.
McDaniel cited “ambiguities in the text of the measure” in his reason for rejecting the proposal. The group can make changes and resubmit its initiative for review.
McDaniel also warned the group that marijuana would still be illegal under federal law if the group is successful, and he suggested that language in the proposal should note that.
“Disclosure of this fact might give a reasonable voter serious ground for reflection,” he said.
Arkansans for Medical Cannabis is a citizen group lobbying for the passage of “Cannabis” laws in Arkansas. According to its website, the group says its mission is to educate the public on the benefits of cannabis with the goal of seeing that the citizens of Arkansas “regain their right as defined by the Constitution to decide for themselves what an appropriate method of medication is without government intervention.”
