Fayetteville retirement community Butterfield Trail Village will use a $30 million bond for a 40,000-square-foot expansion that includes construction of a 38-unit assisted living facility, common space with a restaurant, seven independent living apartments, office space and other capital improvements through 2027.

Groundbreaking is set for 10 a.m. April 6 at 2073 E. Fargo Road, and coincides with the organization’s 40th anniversary. Construction is expected to take 18 months, and the plan is to have residents start moving into the new homes in fall 2027.

The tax-exempt, fixed-rate bond was issued through The Fayetteville Public Facilities Board and is Butterfield Trail Village’s first public bond in more than 20 years.

“This financing is a transformational step for Butterfield Trail Village,” said Kevin Spears, president and CEO of Butterfield Trail Village. “It positions us to expand our assisted living capacity, reinvest in our campus, and continue delivering the exceptional care and community our residents deserve – for the next 40 years and beyond.”

The expansion will be built on Butterfield Trail Village’s 45-acre campus, which serves 417 residents across 280 independent living units, 12 assisted living units and 78 skilled nursing units. After the expansion is completed, the assisted living resident capacity will total 38 units and support 40 residents, up from the existing capacity of 15 residents. The existing 12-unit assisted living cottage will be reconfigured into seven new independent living apartments, comprising one- and two-bedroom units.

The expansion includes construction of a 38-unit assisted living facility, common space with a restaurant and multiple amenities, seven independent living apartments, office space and other capital improvements through 2027.

The cottage will be connected to the assisted living expansion and share expanded, upgraded outdoor living space, according to a Butterfield Trail Village spokesperson. “Both living areas will maintain unique environments appropriate to the needs of the residents in each. It’s important to note that construction of the expansion will be completed and ready to welcome residents before construction in the assisted living cottage begins. Once the assisted living residents are resettled in their new residences, we will start constructing the independent living apartments.”

Florida-based Chancey Architecture and Interior Design is the project designer. Springdale-based Milestone Construction Co. is the general contractor.

“Milestone Construction Company is honored to participate in the groundbreaking for the Assisted Living addition at Butterfield Trail Village,” said Sam Hollis, president and co-owner of Milestone Construction Co. “We are proud to support the continued growth of Fayetteville, and we’re committed to helping this community grow and provide beautiful, quality homes for its residents.”

Butterfield Trail Village has 167 full-time and 70 part-time employees.
