Enrollment at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (UAFS) is essentially flat compared with the same period in 2023, according to unofficial enrollment numbers. Freshmen enrollment also was essentially flat compared with 2023.

The unofficial enrollment numbers after the first 11 days of classes from UAFS show a total enrollment of 5,512, just two students down from the count at the same time in 2023. The overall enrollment in 2023 of 5,514 was up 2.5% from 5,379 in 2022.

The first-time entering freshmen count is 897, up 0.7% from the 891 on the same day in 2023. The official head count on the census date in 2023 was 887, UAFS records show. The increase in freshmen count offsets the reduction in transfer students, UAFS officials said.

“While our transfer numbers are less than optimal, we have made positive changes to prompt growth among the transfer population. We hired an Admissions Advisor for Transfer Students to see the entire process from application to advisement though. We also have two Lions Road Shows on the calendar. These events will bring all things UAFS to the campuses of community colleges & their students,” noted a statement from Maddie Hardwick, assistant director of admissions.

The very slight decrease in unofficial enrollment counts is not cause for concern, said UAFS Chancellor Dr. Terisa Riley. Issues with the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) program, which put pressure on enrollments around the country, also impacted UAFS.

“Given the impacts of the delayed FAFSA and a reduction of five academic programs, we anticipated a reduced enrollment. To be basically flat but growing in first time students, I am very excited. You can feel activity and energy on campus that is palpable. We appreciate students of the River Valley and beyond for entrusting their educational journeys with us,” Riley said.
