The renowned tenor Tito Merelli, known to his fans as "Il Stupendo," is scheduled to sing the lead in “Otello” for the Cleveland Opera Company. But before the star leaves his hotel room, chaos ensues when Merelli's wife leaves him and the distraught Merelli takes a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. A lowly company assistant is thrust into his costume and sent onstage to sing the role, setting of a chain-reaction of mistaken identity, love, and door slamming. A whirlwind comedy of staggering proportions and possibly one of the funniest shows ever written.
