An empty patch of land along Chad Colley Boulevard at Chaffee Crossing will soon be home to a new apartment complex, according to this report from KFSM 5 News.

“They’re called the Reserve at Chaffee Crossing,” said Ivy Owen, executive director for the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority.

Owen says developers will begin construction Jan. 1 on the new apartment complex with more than 400 units.

“They’re gonna have a club house, swimming pool,” said Owen, “They’re gonna have storage units for the tenants in the back of the property.”

New homes pop up all over Chaffee Crossing. People attended a Showcase Home open house Thursday night in a Chaffee Crossing subdivision.

“People are also coming out here cause it’s close to hospitals, doctors, shopping,” said Charles Mock, president of Charles Mock Builders Inc. “It’s a convenient way to go.”

Owen says the new Mitsubishi plant is well on its way to being finished.

“I talked to the construction company Monday,” he said, “They’re ahead of schedule. They’re moving their offices from downtown out here, on site now.”

However, the operational date of the large Mitsubishi assembly plant at Chaffee Crossing is “under review” and could be delayed based on the outcome of legal rulings.

Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas (MPSA) announced on Oct. 16, 2009, plans to build a $100 million, 200,000-square foot wind turbine manufacturing plant on 90 acres at Fort Chaffee. The plant could employ up to 400 once fully operational. Company officials said construction will start in the fourth quarter of 2010 and be complete by the fourth quarter of 2011. Mitsubishi officials expect full production and 400 jobs in place by the first quarter of 2012.

Parts of Chaffee Crossing joined the National Register of Historic Places this week, which means tax credits for people who buy property in the historic district.

“I think it’s just gonna continue to grow and be more and more productive,” Mock said of the area in and around Chaffee Crossing.

The Chaffee Redevelopment Authority hopes to have a bed and breakfast, hotel, or restaurant in the future in the new historic district.
