Dog enthusiasts and their pets came out on Saturday (Oct. 1) to walk the “Trail of Tails” for the Sebastian County Humane Society. Dogs of many different breeds strolled the park with their owners while several supporters showed up to play with the pups.

The “Paws in the Park” event supports The Sebastian County Humane Society, the largest humane society in Arkansas. The purpose of the society is to help prevent animal cruelty, to relieve suffering among animals and to help with the placement of animals in responsible homes.

Founded in 1937, the organization cares for hundreds of animals every day, many of which are rescued from unsafe homes and conditions. The organization houses nearly 400 animals.

“We have several participants who are faithful dog walkers who attend this event,” said Joann Barton, executive director of the Humane Society. “We are grateful to them for their support.”

Several contests including “Best Trick,” “Largest Dog,” “Smallest Dog,” and “Best Look-a-Like” were held during the walk. Trophies were awarded to the animals and their owners. The costume contest featured Spiderman, A Princess Pooch and even the Tooth fairy. Die-hard fans and their dogs sported coordinating OU Sooner outfits and Razorback attire for the event.

Humane Society staff and volunteers served hotdogs, hamburgers and snacks to participants. Event t-shirts were also distributed to dog walkers.

Dog-lover Jimmie Clarke brought her two Greyhounds, Leah and Gracie Anne, which were rescued by a shelter in Springfield, Mo. Clarke volunteers the dogs to help with hospice, Alzheimer’s and even coma patients. She frequently takes the dogs to visit nursing homes to provide comfort and companionship for residents.

“Dogs can do wonders with patients,” said Clarke. “I have witnessed cases where dogs have been brought into a coma patient’s room, and the patient responds by reaching out his or her hand to pet the animal or opens his or her eyes or mouth. It truly is incredible the reaction that dogs can get from those who have been sick or previously unresponsive.”
