Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, one-third of the Arkansas Board of Apportionment, has proposed a July 29th deadline for a vote on new legislative maps.
The Board of Apportionment is the three-member body charged with redrawing the state’s 100 House and 35 Senate districts after the decennial census. McDaniel (D), Gov. Mike Beebe (D) and Secretary of State Mark Martin (R) make up the board.
McDaniel cited the board’s earlier decision to wrap up legislative redistricting by the end of July as a catalyst for the meeting date.
"Therefore, my recommendation is that we schedule a final vote on a House and Senate map on July 29, 2011 at 9:30 am in Old Supreme Court chamber at the State Capitol," said McDaniel in a letter to Beebe and Martin.
"To prepare for that vote, I propose that maps to be considered by the Board for final approval be made available to the public via the BOA website no later than 4 pm on July 19, 2011," he added.
McDaniel also suggested that a final public meeting be held in Little Rock on July 25 after maps are released to invite additional citizen input.
