Old Timers day crowd turns out despite cooler weather

The 34th Annual Old Timers Day got off to a chilly start on Friday (May 13) with unseasonably cool temperatures, but that didn’t keep visitors from heading to downtown Van Buren to take part in the city’s spring festival.

As the weekend warmed up on Saturday, a large crowd filled the streets to enjoy all the games, rides, food and vendors Old Timers Day had to offer.

Local vendors and out-of-town businesses lined Main Street selling food, crafts, and much more. Downtown merchants kept their doors open late and many expanded their business outside to draw more customers.

The festival had something for everyone including several amusement rides and games at the children’s carnival. Live entertainment was also provided throughout the event on the stage near the historic train depot.

Headlining the festival’s entertainment was Grammy nominated gospel singer Barbara Fairchild. A former member of the group “Heirloom,” Fairchild won acclaim for her country hits “The Teddy Bear Song” and “Baby Doll” in the 1970’s and is well-established on the Branson music circuit. She performed a free concert on Saturday evening. Area duo Wes and Hope Turner opened for her earlier in the day, following local band “Gold Country.”

Friday night was Southern Gospel Night and included groups “The Bilderbacks” and “2nd Generation.” On Saturday, the Masonic Lodge hosted a pancake breakfast and the A&M Excursion Train was open to passengers. Saturday evening included an armband night for the rides.

Old Timers Day will continue through Sunday (May 15) until 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Old Town Merchants Association.
