Arkansas Pharmacists Association Reacts To USA Drug Closings

Our content partner, Fox 16 News, reports that the Arkansas Pharmacists Association has dedicated a section of its web site to assist pharmacists who may be laid off in the USA Drug-Walgreens deal.

Walgreens announced on Monday (Sept. 10) that it would close up to 27 USA Drug-owned stores in Arkansas as part of a 76 store closure. Walgreens bought USA Drug earlier this year in a $438 million deal expected to close this month.

“We regret the loss of jobs for pharmacists and other USA Drug staff members, as well as the impact that these closures will have on USA Drug patients,” said APA Executive Vice President Mark Riley. “Pharmacists are medication experts and among the most accessible health care providers in communities throughout Arkansas. We encourage patients in this unfortunate situation to take the opportunity to find a new pharmacy home based on personal service and the expertise of the local pharmacist. A personal relationship with your pharmacist can help improve your health care.”

APA created a section on its website www.arrx.org for those USA Drug pharmacists who are impacted by closures to complete a form stating that they are looking for employment so they can be referred for new opportunities.

The Arkansas Pharmacists Association, founded in 1882, is the statewide professional association representing approximately 2,200 pharmacists in Arkansas. APA strives to further the professional advancement of pharmacists, advocate the value of pharmacy, and safeguard the health and well-being of every Arkansan. Its mission is to advance a professional and business environment for Arkansas pharmacists to be successful and fulfilled in serving patients.

The APA web site notes that there are at least two pharmacists in every one of Arkansas’ 75 counties and there are pharmacies in every county except one. It also says there are currently 4,806 pharmacists licensed in the state, although not all of them practice in Arkansas.
