Tommy Slater to oversee 10 SWEPCO power plants

Tommy Slater has been named vice president — generating assets for Southwestern Electric Power Co. (SWEPCO), a company of Columbus, Ohio-based American Electric Power (AEP). Slater, who lives in Hallsville, Texas, is responsible for operations, maintenance, continuous improvement and safety culture for SWEPCO’s 10 power plants. https://www.swepco.com/default.aspx

Before moving to the new position, he was vice president — generating assets for Public Service Co. of Oklahoma, also an AEP company. Other positions he’s had over his 42 years with AEP include shift supervisor at coal-fired Flint Creek Power Plant in Gentry; lead start-up engineer at coal-fired Welsh Unit 3 in Pittsburg, Texas; FGD superintendent at lignite-fired Pirkey Power Plant in Hallsville; consulting engineering with the Central & South West central organization in Dallas; and manager of Region Engineering Organization. From 2010 and 2016, he was plant manager at Welsh Power Plant for SWEPCO.

He has a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. He’s a registered professional engineer in Texas. SWEPCO, based in Shreveport, La., serves 532,000 customers in western Arkansas, northwest and central Louisiana, northeast Texas and the Texas Panhandle.
