William H. Lawton
William H. Lawton, 83, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, formerly of Salinas, California, passed away at his home on November 30, 2025. He was born in Long Beach, California, on July 2, 1942, to the late Nate and Martha Lawton. During his childhood, the family moved to San Lucas, California. As an adult, William settled in Salinas, where he worked for the Caltrans Highway System for the State of California for 35 years.
It was in Salinas that William met Margaret Hackett, his devoted partner of 49 years. They were inseparable companions who shared a love of fishing, camping, and discovering ‘treasures’ along the freeways. Some finds were gems, others less so, but every adventure came with a story.
After retiring, William and Margaret, affectionately known as Mama, moved to Fort Smith, where they embraced a quieter life. They enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels, and William especially cherished their cats: LuLu, Sissy, Bo, and Baby.
William is survived by his partner, Margaret Hackett, of the home; his sister, Lois Cattanach of Eugene, Oregon; his biological children, Tammy Lawton of Lindon, Utah, and Bryan Lawton of Havelock, North Carolina; and his stepchildren, Carla Kemper and Edward Hackett and wife Amber, all of Fort Smith. He is also survived by his step-grandchildren, Elmer Kemper, Amanda Kemper, Jacob Hackett, and Lucas Hackett, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
William was a wonderful stepfather and step-grandfather, always full of wisdom, advice, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
