Arkansas job openings, new hires down in October

Arkansas posted year-over-year declines in job openings and new hires in October, but posted a big drop in total job separations, according to Tuesday’s (Dec. 30) Jobs Opening and Labor Turnover report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

October job openings in Arkansas were an estimated 73,000, down 6.4% compared with 78,000 in October 2024. The October hires were up from 70,000 in September. U.S. job openings rose 0.7% in October compared with October 2024.

October new hires in Arkansas were an estimated 42,000, down 20.8% compared with 53,000 in October 2024. The new hires were also below the 47,000 in September. New hires nationwide were down 3.8% compared with October 2024.

Separations in Arkansas were an estimated 46,000 in October, down 20.7% compared with 58,000 in October 2024. Separations were above the 44,000 in September. Separations were down 4.4% nationwide in October compared with October 2024. According to the BLS, separations primarily include those who quit a job and jobs lost through layoffs and discharges.

October 2025 employment and unemployment data for Arkansas was delayed because of the federal government shutdown. Partial data for October will be published with the November report. Arkansas’ November jobs report is scheduled to be posted Jan. 7, and November job numbers for the state’s metro areas are scheduled to be posted Jan. 16.

Arkansas’ September  jobless rate was 3.9%, up from 3.5% in September 2024.

Following are other details from the BLS report.

  • The number of job openings increased in four states, decreased in one state, and changed little in 45 states and the District of Columbia in October compared with September. The increases in the job openings level occurred in Alaska (up 14,000) and Montana (up 11,000), as well as in Idaho and Wyoming (+up 9,000 each). The decrease occurred in New York (down 40,000). Nationally, the number of job openings was unchanged.
  • The number of hires increased in three states, decreased in one state, and was little changed in 46 states and the District of Columbia in October compared with September. The increases in the hires level occurred in Alaska (up 15,000), Montana (up 6,000), and Wyoming (up 5,000). The decrease occurred in Pennsylvania (down 48,000).
  • The number of total separations decreased in nine states, increased in three states, and changed little in 38 states and the District of Columbia in October compared with September. The largest decreases in the total separations level occurred in North Carolina (down 39,000), Virginia (down 38,000), and Colorado (down 33,000). The increases occurred in Minnesota and South Carolina (up 17,000 each), as well as in Hawaii (up 7,000).
