James Knox Burton, age 88, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Born with a generous heart and a strong work ethic, James lived a life defined by love, service, and dedication to those around him. A proud veteran, he served his country with honor and carried that same sense of duty into every chapter of his life.

For 57 years, James shared a beautiful marriage with his devoted wife, Gwen Burton, whose partnership and friendship were the cornerstone of his world. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and family.

James was a man who truly knew how to make people feel welcome. He loved to host and entertain, often found in his backyard oasis, listening to Jimmy Buffett, and bringing joy to family and friends through his legendary pool parties. He had the best sense of humor, always cutting up and keeping everyone laughing. Known for being a little ornery in the best way, James could brighten any room with his quick wit and playful spirit.

His kindness, humor, and selfless nature touched everyone who knew him. Even after retirement, James remained a hard-working man, always finding purpose in helping others and staying active. He was known for his positive outlook, always seeing the good in people and the beauty in life’s simple moments.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Gwen Burton; his son, John Osteen; his daughter, Michele Blair; and his grandchildren, Zachary Burton, Bobby Neil Blair III, Jonathan Blair, and Ariel Blair and great grand daughter Emersyn Burton.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend a man whose warmth, humor, and compassion left a lasting mark on every life he touched.

Pallbearers will be Zach Burton, Michael Deleplank, John Osteen, Virapol Sengmanivong, Vijay Sengmanivong and Bobby Blair.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 20th, at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Rosary will be at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Barling, Arkansas.
