Nathan Gairhan has 39 years of banking experience, including 34 years with two banks in Northwest Arkansas. He’s served in his existing role since 2012.
What is the best business advice someone has ever given you? My father taught me from an early age to always do the right thing, and you will never regret it.
How significantly has technology impacted your work? Technology has transformed nearly every part of banking, from how we connect with customers to how we analyze credit. Technology has raised the bar. Customers expect seamless, 24/7 service, and we must balance that convenience with the personal relationships and trust that remain the foundation of community banking. The significant impact of AI will continue to redefine how we interact with customers.
How do you handle pressure and stress in your leadership role? Pressure and stress are part of the job, but I view them as signals that something important needs my attention. For me, preparation and discipline are key, whether that’s keeping the bank’s strategic plan front and center, maintaining strong communication with my team, or making sure that we have sound risk management in place. On a personal level, I make time to recharge outside of work through family, faith and staying active in the community.
What are some aspects of leadership you are still working to improve? I’ve learned that leadership is a continual journey. I’m working on empowering my team more fully, staying agile amid rapid change, fostering innovation while maintaining prudent risk and connecting effectively across generations.
What advice would you give someone wanting to be a leader in your industry? Lead with integrity, as your reputation and credibility are everything in banking. Be a giver of your God-given talents and serve others. Tomorrow’s banking leaders must balance technical mastery with people skills, community engagement and strategic foresight.
How do you stay current with industry trends and changes? The banking industry is evolving rapidly, from regulatory shifts to technological innovations and changing customer expectations. I stay current by tracking industry reports and regulatory changes, engaging with peers and networks, and listening closely to our team and customers. That mix ensures I see trends early and can guide the bank proactively.
Who are your favorite leaders, and why? I admire business leaders who combine vision with integrity. Truett Cathy of Chick-fil-A inspires me by reflecting that true leadership means leading with values, caring for people, serving others and inspiring through example.
If you were not in your current role, what would you be doing? It’s hard to imagine doing anything else other than banking. I’d still want to be in a role that connects people with opportunities, whether that be in finance, business or community development.
