Gary Ray Cottrell, age 74, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, at Hearts of Hospice in Baptist Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on September 28, 1950, in Mulberry, Arkansas, Gary was a man of quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and deep compassion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clay and Mildred Cottrell, whose values shaped the principled life he lived.
Gary dedicated much of his life to public service. He served the citizens of Crawford County with honor and distinction—first as Municipal Judge and later as Circuit Judge. Known for his steady judgment, fairness, and deep respect for the law, Gary earned the trust of his community and the admiration of his colleagues. He treated every person who entered his courtroom with dignity and believed justice should always be guided by both principle and empathy.
Gary is survived by his devoted wife, Julia Cottrell, of the home. Together they built a life grounded in love, partnership, and purpose. He leaves behind two sons, Collin Cottrell (Emily) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Alex Cottrell of Madison, Alabama; and a daughter, Anna Cottrell of Fayetteville, Arkansas. He is also survived by his sister, Gayla Peters of Dyer, Arkansas, and numerous nieces and nephews who loved and admired him deeply.
Those who knew Gary will remember his calm presence, thoughtful wisdom, and the quiet kindness that underscored every aspect of his life. He found joy in simple moments—conversations with family, time in nature, and a life of meaningful service.
A memorial service to celebrate Gary’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, at Heritage Methodist Church in Van Buren, Arkansas. A reception will follow the service in the church Fellowship Hall, and all who knew and loved Gary are warmly invited to attend.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Hearts of Hospice, Baptist Hospital, and Encompass Rehabilitation for their compassionate care during Gary’s final days. A special and deeply personal thank you goes to Dr. Charles Jennings, who was not only Gary’s trusted physician but a true friend. His care, dedication, and kindness meant more than words can express.
