Ben Harris Daly passed away comfortably in his sleep on July 14. He was 87 years old.
Born in Corinth, Mississippi to Harry James Daly, a cotton buyer, and his mother, Julia Elizabeth Harris Daly, Ben moved to Fort Smith with his parents and older brother, Jim, in 1947 and often recalled the excitement and bustle of the town in those post-war days. He graduated from Fort Smith High School.
For many years, Ben worked as a cook at The White Spot before starting his own restaurant in the early 1980s. “Ben’s Snack Shop” was known for its early morning breakfast, delicious chili, and as a place to share a laugh and a meal with friends. In addition to his skills in the kitchen, Ben took great pride in his lawn and garden and was an unwavering fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Living up to his CB handle, “Gentle Ben”, he is remembered for his kind demeanor and affection towards animals, as well as his keen sense of humor. He took his commitment to Fort Smith seriously and volunteered in many ways to improve our community. He was a member of the Jaycees, served as an assistant scout leader for Boy Scout Troop 23, and advisor to the Arkansas Chapter of the Order of the Arrow, a board member of the Fort Smith Boxing Association, and a member of the vestry at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. In his retirement, he volunteered to serve as part of the sack lunch program at St. John’s Episcopal Church, preparing meals for people in need.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Laura Ann Sherrill Daly, his children Katrina Nelson, Bill Daly, and Amy Daly, daughter-in-law Jane, granddaughters Isabel and CJ Daly, his children from a previous marriage, Ben Jr. and Andria, as well as his nieces, nephews, and extended family.
His family is thankful for the opportunity to celebrate a man who was loved and cherished by many. Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 16, at 10:00 am at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, with a reception to follow. In place of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to the sack lunch program. Donations may be made in his name to the following:
