ArcBest officials said a recent electric semi-truck test indicates “meaningful progress” in the technology, but more evaluation is needed before the Fort Smith-based shipping and logistics company adds the vehicles to its fleet.

In a Wednesday (July 9) press release, the company said it tested a Tesla Class 8 electric vehicle in over-the-road operations through its ABF Freight subsidiary. ABF is one of the nation’s largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers.

The three-week test was conducted in routes between service centers in Reno, Nev., and Sacramento, Calif., with “regional runs” in the San Francisco area. The electric vehicle traveled 4,494 miles and averaged 321 miles per day with an overall energy efficiency of 1.55 kWh per mile, according to ArcBest.

“Freight transportation is a vital part of the global economy, and we know it also plays a significant role in overall greenhouse gas emissions,” Dennis Anderson, ArcBest chief innovation officer, said in a statement. “While the path to decarbonization presents complex challenges — such as infrastructure needs and alternative fuel development — it also opens the door to innovation. Vehicles like the Tesla Semi highlight the progress being made and expand the boundaries of what’s possible as we work toward a more sustainable future for freight.”

ArcBest said the electric vehicle “generally matched” the performance of diesel vehicles and received positive driver feedback. The vehicle showed “meaningful progress” in range, charging efficiency, and driver support.

“We’re not looking for a truck that performs well ‘for an EV,’” said Matt Godfrey, ABF Freight president. “It must meet or exceed the performance and total cost of ownership targets of our most efficient diesel units. This pilot gives us great insight into the potential of EV semis in our operations.”

An April 2025 report by Electrek indicates that prices are around $150,000 for a 300-mile range Tesla semi and $180,000 for a 500-mile range Tesla semi. Electrek said comparable diesel vehicle prices range between $150,000 and $220,000.

Electrek also reports that Ryder is telling California officials that its plan to roll out electric vehicles in that state is uncertain because of delays in Tesla production and higher costs per vehicle.

ArcBest noted in the press release it has not yet determined how or if it will incorporate the Tesla semi in its operations. The company reports having nine electric yard tractors, two electric forklifts, and two Class 6 electric straight trucks.

“ArcBest will continue to assess the long-term viability of Class 8 EVs within its fleet, with a focus on leveraging innovation to improve efficiency, reduce emissions and deliver sustainable logistics solutions that create value for customers,” the company said.

Founded in 1923, ArcBest has around 14,000 employees at 250 locations. ABF Freight is the largest subsidiary and is a less-than-truckload carrier. The company is set to report second quarter earnings on July 30. The consensus estimate is per share net income of $1.41 a share, and estimated revenue of $1.04 billion.

ArcBest shares (NASDAQ: ARCB) closed Wednesday at $82.94, down 2 cents. In the past 52 weeks the share price has ranged between $129.83 and $55.19.
